As one chapter of the comic book ends, one more opens for James Gunn. The mastermind behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was named head of the newly launched DC Studios in Fall 2022, replacing Kevin Feige role that he has at Marvel Studios, other side of the fence.

James Gunn spent the next two years outlining his vision for the DC Universe, which ditched much of the DC Extended Universe and instead revolved around a new look at characters.

DC Studios will debut in December with the animated series Creature Commandos in Max, and it will officially launch on July, 2025 with David Corenswet’s Superman. The DC Universe is starting to get going, but don’t expect its journey to be a constant palette.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios head James Gunn defended the source material for his cinematic universe, emphasizing that he wanted to bring the unique flavors of the pages of DC Comics to the big screen.

“What I always loved about DC Comics was they always had mainstream comics, but they also had independent comics like The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen and All-Star Superman,” James Gunn said. “It was different in that way from Marvel.”

Marvel Studios has enjoyed unprecedented success in its first 11 years of filmmaking, essentially following the Marvel formula. While several directors have come into the fold and incorporated their signature styles into their projects, such as James Gunn’s comedy in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Ryan Coogler’s dialogue drama in the Black Panther film, Marvel’s Infinity Saga projects have all kept the same visual style.

James Gunn has indicated his DC Universe, while a vast and cohesive franchise will allow each chapter to have its own visual identity.

“That’s something I really want to keep in the studio,” James Gunn continuously said. “Every project created will bring a different perspective from the artists.”

The DC Universe’s prequel comes in the form of Creature Commandos, an animated adventure set during World War II, which will arrive on Max on December 5. The rebooted franchise’s “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” kicked off the live-action side of the story and the main story when Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
