Chances are you’ve seen a wave of Blake Lively’s floral looks during the It Ends with Us press tour, or at least read Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, which inspired the film. The story is finally making its way to the big screen, and we couldn’t be more excited.
But if you can’t make it to the theater, don’t fear, It Ends with Us will soon be available to stream at home on your TV or other electronic device. Here’s what we know about It Ends with Us.
The story follows Lily Bloom, played by Blake Lively, a flower shop owner who struggles with her dark past while building a bright future for herself in Boston. There, she falls for charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, played by Justin Baldoni, but things go awry when Lily Bloom realizes she may be involved in the latest iteration of a cycle of abuse. While her love for Ryle Kincaid runs deep, she finds herself faced with a difficult decision, especially when her first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), re-enters in her life.
Earlier this month, in an interview with Access Hollywood, Blake Lively opened up about her role as Lily Bloom, telling that the character is “a walking, talking conflict, but it’s perfectly harmonious for her. But because Lily Bloom is multifaceted, you really feel what she’s feeling,” she added.
Justin Baldoni, on the other hand, was impressed by Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel when his agent first pitched it to him in 2019. “It was sexy and romantic and mysterious. By the end, I was crying real tears,” he told to Variety.
His vision for the film called for the characters to age, which upset some fans of the book in the novel, Lily Bloom is supposed to have dropped out of college. But in a interview with Entertainment Weekly, Justin Baldoni explained, “I knew from the beginning that the kind of movie I wanted to make wasn’t about a 23 year old girl. I wanted female of all ages to be able to see themselves, and aging the characters, I think, helps make it a universal story.”
As Lily Bloom got older, Justin Baldoni wanted to show that it wasn’t simplistic or romantic inexperience that led her to Ryle Kincaid, and that abuse could happen to anyone, regardless of age, status, or experience. He also aimed to subvert stereotypes about Ryle Kincaid character, telling Variety, “He’s not a mustache twirling villain, he’s a man in deep pain and trauma who makes terrible decisions that are never acceptable or forgivable under any circumstances.”
