Disney has released a sneak peek at the upcoming “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Earlier, the singers took the stage and teased a snippet of the film’s opening song before director Barry Jenkins appeared. “Like all of you, The Lion King left an indelible mark on me,” Barry Jenkins also said. “A young lion facing his destiny is an absolute honor to tell his story.”
Barry Jenkins also announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda will write the original songs for the film. Manuel Miranda received a standing ovation when he joined Barry Jenkins to perform the song. “I Always Wanted a Brother.”
The Lion King prequel is set before the 2019 live-action photorealistic storytelling event and is directed by Barry Jenkins. “Mufasa” focuses on the early years of the supreme ruler of Pride Rock, as well as his fearsome younger brother Scar. Aaron Pierre and Calvin Harrison Jr. are leading the voice acting for Mufasa. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter will return and voice Nala, her daughter Blue Ivy Carter will play Kiara, daughter of King Samba and Queen Nala.
A new trailer also features a young Mufasa and his brother Scar, as their relationship transitions from brother to enemy.
The new cast members include Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki, a powerful lion with big plans for his pride; Lennie James as Taka’s father (Obasi), Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother (Eshe), Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother (Afia), and Keith David as Mufasa’s father (Masego).
Mufasa reunites Barry Jenkins with his team of artisans, including composer Nicholas Britell, cinematographer James Laxton and editor Joi McMillon.
“The Lion King” (2019) remake, directed by Jon Favreau, grossed $1.66 billion worldwide and was one of seven Disney films to cross the $1 billion mark that year.
Mufasa: The Lion King release in theaters on Dec, 20.
