The August box office is looking promising with Sony’s drama “It Ends with Us” having a spectacular opening day and previewing over $24 million at 3,611 locations through Friday. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best selling 2016 novel is now aiming for even higher projections, at more than $45 million over three days. A strong start for a drama series with a production budget of just $25 million, well below a studio’s typical summer costs.
Colleen Hoover’s newfound popularity and her marketing bias toward female audiences on TikTok have led many analysts to believe that “It Ends with Us” could surpass its previous track record. Heading into the third outing of Marvel’s hit “Deadpool and Wolverine,” starring Blake Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds, the film is now poised for a second place opening weekend. “It Ends with Us” was the highest-grossing film on its opening day, even without the $7 million it earned from previews. Its $17 million Friday haul surpasses Deadpool and Wolverine.
The Justin Baldoni directed film stars Blake Lively as a flower girl who falls for a neurosurgeon, also Justin Baldoni, forced to confront harsh reality when the arrival of a childhood friend Brandon Sklenar complicates her relationship. Fueled by the enthusiasm for Colleen Hoover’s novel and the enthusiasm of early moviegoers (the audience survey company Cinema Score gave it a top rating), the film began to establish itself as a franchise among its blockbuster peers this summer.
